“Do it Anyway”

Hello there

I am coming to you today with a little story and some words of self love. Grab a drink of choice and settle in.

Yesterday I came in to my daily yoga class with a headful. At the beginning of each class you begin with an internal meditation to acknowledge what is on your mind and then you release it i order to focus on your practice. I know it sounds hippy dippy, but I am not kidding this is the best part of my day, being able to think about nothing and just be; is an unreal feeling. Let me tell you, it is a true feeling of peace. Any way, back to the story. I went about my practice, and at the end of the class we come to a final relaxation where we lay or sit a position to reflect. To end the relaxation period my instructor read this poem:

“People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind,
people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful,
you will win some false friends and some true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank,
people may cheat you.
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,
someone could destroy overnight.
Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness,
they may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today,
people will often forget tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,
and it may never be enough.
Give the best you've got anyway.

You see,
in the final analysis it is between you and God;
it was never between you and them anyway. “ -
Mother Theresa

This is an appropriate situation to say I was SHOOK. And I really was. I was shaken down to my very core and I cried. The universe works in such incredible ways and when that poem was read, it addressed every thought I had when I entered my studio that morning. It was exactly what I needed to hear.

As i mentioned earlier, I came in to my practice with a mind consumed by thoughts related to the end of my fall semester. I was bogged down by negativity and hatred from outside influences. I had never experienced any type of induced depression before and it hurt and Im not going to lie, it was really hard.

Something I have learned and I think we all can learn is that cultivating love and support for not only yourself, but for others as well is so important. Life is hard! Figuring out who you are is hard! Especially while in college. People can be critical, but ultimately the best thing you can do is be kind to others despite their actions, and do what makes you grow and flourish.

If you want to change your major, or maybe start a new job. Do it. If you want to pick up a new instrument or maybe listen to a new genre of music. Do it. Maybe you want to change your attitude and outlook on life. Do it. Life is too short. What ever it may be, despite what other people may think Do it Anyway.
